Context
GhLearner was commissioned by an education-focused client that wanted better tools to help students prepare for examinations. The service reaches learners through a website, Android and iOS applications and a WhatsApp learning bot. Students can use the channel that suits them while keeping the same account across the system. More than 50,000 unique users have used the combined channels, based on internal platform records. Mfidie Solutions delivered the web, mobile API, application and WhatsApp development as a client engagement.
The problem
The client believed existing learning software was not serving students well enough. An examination-preparation product also faces a practical access problem: a student may study in a browser on one day, use a mobile app the next and return through WhatsApp later. Separate systems would make it harder to keep accounts and learning access consistent. As usage grows, the service must remain responsive across all these channels. WhatsApp adds its own pressure because students expect a quick answer within a conversation, not a long wait while the backend processes a request. Maintaining speed and dependable access for many learners became one of the hardest parts of the project.
Our contribution
Mfidie Solutions developed the web platform, mobile APIs, Android and iOS applications, WhatsApp learning bot and shared backend integration. The client set the educational objective and commissioned the service. The team worked on account authentication, database design, performance and the delivery of learning functions across channels.
Approach
We used Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL for a shared backend serving the website, apps and WhatsApp API. A learner can use the same account across these channels rather than maintain unrelated profiles. The team structured and optimised the database to support the different request patterns. Background jobs handle work that should not block a response, and API request management helps avoid overwhelming the backend. These choices were particularly important for the conversational WhatsApp experience, where response time affects whether studying feels practical.
Challenges
- Keeping responses fast across the website, mobile applications and WhatsApp required database optimisation, background processing and careful API request handling.
- Supporting several interfaces against one backend meant account and data structures had to work across channels rather than be designed for only one application.
- Ongoing maintenance had to serve students returning regularly, not just users trying the product once.
Outcomes
GhLearner is available through its website, Android and iOS apps and WhatsApp learning channel. The shared account system allows students to move between them. Internal records show 52,389 unique learners across all channels combined as of October 2026; this is a deduplicated platform figure, not a sum of app installs and WhatsApp conversations.
